Like many Irish people of my generation I remember with great fondness going to ‘Funderland’ in the RDS in Dublin as a child.
‘Funderland’ is a fairground with all the great attractions one would expect to find.
This String Quartet is a musical description of a fairground such as ‘Funderland’.
Each movement refers to a particular fairground attraction and tries to convey musically the experience of partaking in each attraction.
One of my favourite things about Funderland was always the sweet and sticky candyfloss, so it is no coincidence that this music contains a bit of what some humourless intellectuals might consider musical candyfloss!
