Programme Note

‘Shadowplay’ reflects my composing style of the early 21st Century, before I became fully immersed in Irish traditional music. It mixes minimalist influences with jazz harmonies and poly-metric cycles. It has a virtuoso flute part and I’ve had the pleasure of performing it on many occasions with the great flautist Aisling Agnew, who performs it brilliantly.

I composed the work in 2002 when I was a student at the DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama in Dublin. In 2003 I moved to London to study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. It was there I met Aisling and she helped me refine the piece to make it more idiomatic for the flute.

Our recording is the title track of the album ‘Shadowplay – New Music For Flute and Guitar’
