Irish Tune Category: Clipped Highlands

Karaka Lobster

A tune composed in 2021 driving close to the town of Kaikōura on the South Island of New Zealand. There’s a famous Lobster shack restaurant there called ‘Karaka Lobster’. This is a highland-style tune in 7/4, thus a ‘Clipped Highland’

An Beirneach

This tune is composed in tribute to one of the best Irish fiddlers I ever heard – the late James Byrne aka An Beirneach. He loved playing hypnotic Highlands, this is a hypnotic Highland but it’s in the odd time signature of 7/4. The rhythm of it is ‘clipped’ by one beat compared to a usual Highland, so I call this tune form a ‘Clipped Highland’.
