Dave Flynn – Classical Guitar Works (CD)

10

“Dave Flynn is truly one of my fav composers – fresh honest beautiful music – so it’s very exciting to see him release an album of his guitar works” – Laura Snowden, Classical Guitarist

“Three Minimalist Pieces also introduces us to Flynnโ€™s playing…he dispatches them fluently and cleanly, and with a warm and varied tone and generally sound musical sense.” – The Journal of Music

“Dave Flynnโ€™s music is many things, but never mundane, and deserves to be known and recognized by a large audience in the guitar world.” – Charles Postlewate, Classical Guitarist (RIP)

“The first of the Three Minimalist Pieces (1998โ€“2000), โ€˜5to9โ€™, is perhaps the most successful work on the album. It, too, has a clear touchstone (John Adamsโ€™ย Phrygian Gates) but it has moments of surprise (especially in how some guitaristic strums break open the texture). Of the other movements, โ€˜Rainstormโ€™ combines high fretting positions with open strings to create shifting and unpredictable arpeggio patterns, and โ€˜Rollercoasterโ€™ ends the suite with a brisk 5/8 scherzo.” – The Journal of Music

About ‘Classical Guitar Works’

Frisbee Records releases the first ever album dedicated to Dave Flynn’s classical guitar music. Flynn’s guitar works were published by one of the world’s leading music publishers, Mel Bay in 2020, now the sheet music comes to life with Flynn’s own interpretations of these distinctive pieces.

Writing about these works upon publication Mel Bay stated – “Flynn has melded Celtic, minimalist and neo-baroque influences in this ground-breaking addition to the modern concert repertoire. Fans of the music of Steve Reich, John Adams and Philip Glass will enjoy โ€œThree Minimalist Piecesโ€ and the โ€œSix Etudesโ€.”

The influence of Flynn’s native Ireland can be heard in some of these etudes, as well as in the Satie-esque โ€œThree Gymn O’Paddiesโ€.

The imposing โ€œPassacagliaโ€ is a challenging concert work dedicated to Julian Bream. While the โ€œHomage Sonatinaโ€ pays tribute to three other iconic guitarists: Heitor Villa-Lobos, Andy Summers and Leo Brouwer.
