Echoes of Bamako (2003)
for String Orchestra - 5-6 mins

Premiered by the Prague Chamber Orchestra, Dvorak Hall, Prague, Czech Republic. 18 March 2009.
MIDI Recording

Programme Note

One of my biggest inspirations is the many styles of diverse music that come from Africa.

This piece was partly inspired by the great Malian band The Super Rail Band.

The work begins with a bit of a strange fanfare-like opening and then switches to music influenced by the hynotic rhythmic style of the Super Rail Band.

It ends with a bit a mix of Malian style melodic figures and Baroque sequences.

Echoes of Bamako received its World Premiere in the Dvorak Hall in Prague, Czech Republic on 18th March 2009 in a performance by the Prague Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Jiri Malat

Review from the Premiere!

I stumbled across this review, it's in Czech! Google Translate would give me the impression that the reviewer liked the opening but didn't like the repetitious nature of the rest of it. The audience seemed to like it though. You can't please everyone I guess!
